Welcome to the
Buddhist Healthcare Chaplaincy Trust

We are members of and actively support the
Network of Pastoral, Spiritual and Religious Care in Health
Buddhist Healthcare Chaplains provide a range of help and support to patients, their friends and relatives and to hospital or hospice staff. Increasingly they may also be found providing services in the community. Depending on their area of operation they may provide everything from a listening ear to emotional and spiritual support and when appropriate faith based activities. They can provide support during a crisis as well as during ongoing recovery. They will often also support bereaved family members. Chaplains work with people of all faiths and none.

 Education

We provide training for people at all stages of their chaplaincy careers, whether starting out or involved in the mentoring and supervision of others

Community

We represent Buddhists Healthcare Chaplains from all traditions, and are part of the UK Network for Pastoral, Spiritual and Religious Care in Health as well as the Network of Buddhist Organisations.

Endorsement

We have taken the lead in establishing an endorsement process for chaplains at all levels. Our process provides employers with confidence in the training and experience of those they appoint

What we do

Our aim is to advance the role of Buddhist Healthcare Chaplaincy for the public benefit by

1. The training and education of Chaplains of all faiths and those of secular beliefs regarding the role of Buddhism, Meditation and Mindfulness, in Health and Social Care.
2. The provision of Buddhist Healthcare Chaplaincy Services to hospitals, hospices, community and other healthcare services throughout the United Kingdom.
3. The provision of Buddhist and Interfaith education, dialogue and discourse though workshops, seminars, public lectures and through electronic and print media.
4. The networking of all interested in Buddhist Healthcare Chaplaincy including but not limited to offering membership services, conferences, endorsement, mediation and dispute resolution, supervision and mentoring.

All our members are committed to the 5 core chaplaincy principles.
These are:

1. The chaplain maintains a spiritual life
2. The chaplain will not proselytise
3. The chaplain will be ecumenical in approach.
4. The chaplain works across faith groups
5. The chaplain keeps her/his skills up to date

Ideas and Innovation

Over the years, our Knowledge and experience has helped us be at the forefront of Multifaith Healthcare Chaplaincy in the UK. We have helped raise the profile of the Buddhist contribution to health and social care, especially in areas such as endorsement. We continue to develop new ideas and services for the benefit of Chaplains and those they help.

Expert Knowledge

At the Buddhist Healthcare Chaplaincy Trust we have members who work in hospitals, hospices, community medical centres and forensic services. We therefore have a range of knowledge and expertise which can help any service in the planning, delivery and review of chaplaincy in general and Buddhist contributions in particular.
